The International Education Center (IEC) was established in April 1947 under the name International Education and Cultural Association. In August 1948, it was officially recognized as an incorporated foundation by the Ministry of Education. In December 1958, jurisdiction was transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and since April 2012, IEC has operated as a general incorporated foundation under the jurisdiction of the Cabinet Office of Japan.
For over nearly 80 years, IEC has been committed to two principal areas of activity: "Promotion of International Education and Cross-cultural Understanding" and "Language Education: English and Japanese".

Japan-America Student Conference
The Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) was founded in 1934 by a group of university students with the firm belief that “world peace depends on peace in the Pacific, and peace in the Pacific depends on peace between Japan and the United States. To achieve this, students must also play a role.”
Since its inception, the conference has been held annually—alternating between Japan and the United States each summer for approximately one month—and is planned and managed entirely by students from both countries. The program aims to foster mutual understanding, trust, and friendship between Japanese and American students through open and honest dialogue, thereby contributing to the long-term stability of bilateral relations.
Participants travel together, live together, and engage in in-depth discussions on a wide range of topics including politics, economics, society, education, and culture. The conference also features lectures by experts in various fields, allowing students to explore the current state and future of U.S.-Japan relations and global issues.

International Speech Contest in Japanese
Since 1960, the International Speech Contest in Japan has been held annually with the aim of providing individuals from around the world with a platform to express their views in Japanese on various aspects of Japanese society and culture. By doing so, the contest fosters opportunities for participants and audiences alike to reflect on the future of Japan and the international community.
The event has gained wide recognition, with highlights broadcast on NHK television, and selected speeches featured in junior and senior high school textbooks in Japan, making it a meaningful and influential program. Since 1996, the contest has been co-hosted in partnership with the Japan Foundation.
